According to the Ghana Union of Traders (GUTA), the Agriculture Ministry’s initiative to sell food at lower prices is a bad idea.
Dr. Joseph Obeng, President of GUTA, dismissed claims that Ghanaian traders are exploiting Ghanaians.
He claimed that the government is inciting the public to oppose traders.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he described the initiative as unsustainable.
He suggested that if the items the government is selling are in excess, we could add value to them, preserve them or even export some.
He stated that traders face numerous challenges and incur significant costs in transporting goods to sell, which are all factored into their pricing.
What they’re doing is not sustainable. There are inciting the public against us. They are also painting a picture that we’re profiteering, but that’s not the case.”
Why aren’t they including products like tomatoes that would otherwise go to waste? Because when you buy these goods and they go to waste, you have to calculate and account for them,” Dr Obeng said.
