The Ghana Union of Traders (GUTA) has revealed that several members have died following the recent economic hardship and depreciation of the cedi.
According to GUTA Public Relations Officer John Obiri Yeboah, several of their members were unable to repay their loans, which resulted in the deaths of some of them.
He told Kwabena Agyapong on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Gm that businesses went through difficult times and those who could not stand it gave up the ghost.
Mr. Obiri Yeboah stated that the hardships endured in recent months were unprecedented.
“We witnessed an unprecedented crisis. We went through extremely difficult times and witnessed the deaths of some members who were unable to bear the pain and hardship any longer.”
”Every Ghanaian is aware of the difficulty we went through. That is not in dispute,” he stressed, adding, over the past three weeks, we have seen some change”.
”The situation affected our capital. The said aspect is that those who took loans could not pay. Some died, and others also fell sick.”
