According to the Ghana National Fire Service, reports on fire outbreaks in Ghana are only available to the owners of the facilities that were destroyed by the outbreak.
Mr. Timothy Affum, Public Relations Officer for the Service (ACFO), revealed this during an interview on NyankontonMu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm.
He was responding to a question about why fire outbreak reports in the country are not made public.
He stated that, while the public is understandably concerned about the release of the reports, Ghanaians should not be concerned. They must understand that every outbreak has a facility owner. And we are only obligated to release the report to the facility’s owner.
If the building is a public building, we can make the report public. However, if the facility has an owner, we are obligated to provide the report to the owner upon formal request. If we give you the report and you want to publish it, that’s fine. However, if it is a market and a public facility, we could publicise it so that the public is aware of what caused the incident.
Meanwhile, he has admonished the public to be fire safety conscious.
He said fire management is a shared responsibility, and Ghanaians must support the service in fighting fire outbreaks.
