The Ghana National Service (GNFS) has advised the general public to desist from making prank calls to its emergency numbers.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem, on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, Public Relations Officer ACFO Timothy Affum said the prank calls hinder the Fire Service from attending to people with genuine fire cases.
The Ghana National Fire Service recorded 624 fire cases in December 2022, and has since embarked on massive public education on fire and how to minimize the frequent occurrences of fire outbreaks during the harmattan period.
The figure represents an increase of 10.1%in fires recorded in December 2021.
Speaking on the issue of safety, he advised Ghanaians to only dial emergency numbers when they truly needed to.
”We are appealing to Ghanaians to understand our emergency lines are for emergency cases. If you do not have emergency cases, don’t call our lines.”
He stated that this is to ensure that people who require genuine assistance receive it from the service.
When there is an outbreak, the public should not hesitate to call the service.
He expressed concern that some people try to put out fires before calling the fire department.
This, he said, was not the best practise, and the public should always call the service as soon as possible.
