Minister for Roads and Highways Mr. Amoako-Atta has bemoaned corruption in public service.
The Minister, who is also a member of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, lamented that although there are laws that criminalize corruption, some civil servants and political officeholders are still stealing from the state.
The Minister suggested laws that would make corruption unattractive for civil servants and political officeholders.
”This is not how to develop a country. Corruption in the public service is alarming. We should no longer entertain that,” he declared.
He advised public officeholders to be disciplined and not steal from the state when they get the opportunity to serve the people.
Mr. Amoako-Atta made these remarks yesterday, Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), where the fisheries commission appeared to respond to some infractions cited in the Auditor General’s report for 2020.
”The thievery in public service ot public office is alarming. We need strong laws to prevent them. There are criminal laws ro deal with these crimes, but several persons have gone off the hook for these crimes. Crime is not time-bound. If you commit a crime and retire, you must be dragged to court and prosecuted. That is the only way to stop these embezzlements and stealing of state funds.”
