Political analyst, Mr. Boakye Yiadom, says it makes no difference whether 100 people compete in the presidential primaries of the government’s New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to the analyst, what is most important is for the party’s leadership to put in place measures to reduce the number of members through acceptable means.
He stated that the process should be free, fair, and transparent so that no candidate feels cheated or accuses the party of favouritism.
The analyst went on to state that “the number of people who have expressed interest in contesting is not what matters the most. The most important thing for the NPP to do after their primaries is to implement measures that will unite the party.
The next important thing is to prevent anything that will make them favour one candidate to the detriment of other candidates.”
We are practising democracy, and party politics is all about control. When people express an interest in joining your party, you greet them but do not discourage them. You do not prevent members from running for positions.
He emphasized the importance of the party properly utilizing its special delegates congress to prune the number down when the number of interested candidates exceeds five.
He advised the NPP to learn from its mistakes and allow for a fair election process for the presidential candidate.
He emphasized “If the party allows a free, fair, and transparent process for selecting the presidential candidate, it makes no difference how many candidates run. They will remain united following the process “.
