The Ghana Importers and Exporters Association has expressed its displeasure with the implementation of the three new taxes.
Asaki Samson Awingobit, Executive Secretary of the Association, stated that they petitioned parliament not to approve the taxes, but it went ahead anyway.
He told Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that “clearly it is not going to help.” We are fully aware that these are killer taxes. This will not benefit the business community. We strongly requested that the MPs reject it. But they went ahead and approved it.
These taxes irritate the business community. We had a lot in 2022. We do not want the government to overburden the business community. Several companies lost money last year. And for you to introduce a new policy and declare that you will tax people’s profits before the tax is insensitive, it is pure wickedness, and it will cause businesses to fail. This, in my opinion, is not the best way to proceed.”
He stated that the business community will meet to discuss the issue and communicate their position to Ghanaians.
He claimed that the current government promised to shift Ghana from taxation to production but has done the opposite.
“We strongly believe that these taxes should not be implemented at this time. The government promised to be a production-oriented government rather than a taxation-oriented government. When the business community complains about the high cost of doing business and Ghanaians complain about poor living conditions, and you impose these draconian taxes, it means you don’t care about the plight of ordinary people.”
When asked if the new taxes would be passed on to consumers, he said no “We do not intend to impose new taxes on Ghanaians. We will meet as a business community to decide how to proceed. We care about consumers and the business community, so we will convene and make a decision “.
