Former President John Dramani Mahama has stated that his do-or-die comment has been misconstrued by his opponents.
The former president says the comments were treasonable nor was it meant to incite anyone for violence.
The clarification from Mr. Mahama comes after National Organizer for the NPP Henry Nana Boakye aka Nana B petitioned the Police CID to arrest and prosecute him and the NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.
Mr Mahama told NDC delegates in the Fanteakwa South Constituency of the Eastern Region on Wednesday that “when they hear the name Mahama, they become afraid.” I had maintained that the 2024 general elections were no laughing matter. The general elections would be important for our country, which is why I indicated it was a do-or-die situation. The opponents have misconstrued my statements. My remarks are not intended to incite anyone. I’m not urging people to slash people with machetes; that’s not a life-or-death situation. Do-or-die indicates that we must work tirelessly to win the elections at whatever cost. This does not imply that we will inflict knife cuts on anybody.”
“It’s like a football match between Hearts and Kotoko, with one team leading by a point, and the final match is crucial because whoever wins that final match will be triumphant. This football game had the feel of a do-or-die situation. That doesn’t imply we’ll start attacking each other with machetes.”
The NPP has argued that the aspiring presidential candidate of the NDC had consistently described the 2024 general elections as one of “do or die” for the NDC.
“It is, in fact, a no secret that the NDC has always resorted to violence and intimidation against their opponents during the conduct of general elections, and this was summed up by their 2024 presumptive presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama. He has stated emphatically that: ‘NDC has revolutionary root, and that when it comes to unleashing violence, nobody can beat us [NDC] in unleashing violence’.”
“Other leading members of the NDC, including Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the national chairman of the Party, have made similar threatening and malicious comments. Indeed, following his election as National Chairman, Asiedu Nketiah stated in his victory speech that, the NDC would fight the 2024 general elections to win a second independence for Ghana, and that, they are prepared to sacrifice everything including their lives for an NDC victory.”
