Dr. Clement Apaak, Member of Parliament for Builsa South, is wondering how others’ Ghana cards might be used to register sim cards without their knowledge.
He has also stated that the system has been compromised and exploited, confirming public concerns about the system’s ability to be used as the sole form of identity for voter registration.
A section of the Ghanaian public has claimed that some telecommunications networks, supposedly on the wrong side of their clients, utilise their Ghana cards to register the SIMs of other subscribers.
Some said that when they attempted to register new sim cards they had purchased in addition to the ones they had previously registered, they were told they had already met the threshold, despite the fact that they had no awareness their cards were being used to register the cards of strangers.
Dr. Clement Apaak responded to the problem in a tweet, stating that the concerns raised by the exercise demonstrated that the Ghana card system can be abused and cannot be utilised to register new voters.
“Peoples Ghanacards used to register SIM cards by others without their knowledge? Is it not clear now, as many argued before, that the Ghanacard and associated data can be manipulated? And this is the card Jean Mensa wants to be the sole ID for purposes of registration to vote?”
