The ruling New Patriotic Party has cleared six out of the eight persons who picked nomination forms to contest in the upcoming by-election at Kumawu
Eight NPP interested persons picked forms to contest in the primary but the party has cleared only six after the vetting process.
The committee has however failed to disclose reasons why two of the aspiring candidates were disqualified.
The New Patriotic Party has set Sunday, April 23, 2023, to select a candidate ahead of the by-election at Kumawu.
The Chairman of the Vetting Committee, Danquah Smith Buttey speaking on the issue said “We are done with the vetting of the aspirants. They have picked their balloting. We need a very credible candidate to win the by-election. They are all credible, but we need someone who is going to win the seat for us.”
He also indicated that the reasons why two of the persons who picked forms were disqualified are an “Internal issues, [which] I can’t discuss here”.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. A.S.K Bagbin, a few weeks ago declared the Kumawu seat in the Ashanti Region vacant.
Mr. Bagbin declared the seat vacant following the death of the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Philip Atta Basoah.
Mr. Basoah died on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
The Speaker in a communication to the Electoral Commission (EC) on Friday, March 31, 2023, directed the Electoral Commission to hold a by-election for a replacement of the late MP.
Article 112 (5) of the 1992 constitution states that “whenever a vacancy occurs in Parliament, the Clerk to Parliament shall notify the Electoral commission in writing within seven days after the vacancy occurred, and a by-election shall be held within thirty days after the vacancy occurred.”
