Athletics is currently the number one sporting discipline in Ghana, according to the second Vice President of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA).
Mr. Charles Osei ‘The Barrister’ Assibey, says he would challenge anyone with facts and numbers to back up his claim.
In an interview with Rainbow Radio’s Frank Osei Winter, the renowned broadcaster and president of the Arm Wrestling Federation stated that athletics is the only discipline that has regularly flown the flag of Ghana high in world tournaments over the last decade.
He has therefore challenged individuals who have alleged that athletics is underperforming to present facts and data to back up their claims.
He strongly disagreed, declaring unequivocally that athletics is currently the number one sporting discipline that has made Ghana proud when compared to other sporting disciplines.
The only issue he mentioned was a lack of adequate funding, despite the efforts of stakeholders in the field.
“We’ve made progress. I challenge anyone who says athletics is declining to give proof to back up their claims. Such remarks are categorically wrong and should be ignored. When you look at the job our men and women are doing, you will agree with me that athletics is the number one sporting discipline. Several Ghanaian athletes are competing in the world arena. What we need is adequate funding, and we will perform significantly better than we do now. There is no sporting discipline that has carried the flag of Ghana higher than athletics in the last ten years, and I am willing to defend this at any time.”
