A medical doctor, Dr. Eric Amoah, the director of Aid Life Hospital, Ashaiman, has expressed the worrying phenomenon of kidney disease among young people.
He lamented that the number of young people contracting kidney problems has reached an alarming rate.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, he cautioned the public to take preventative steps.
He indicated that one of the major issues causing this issue is uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, and other lifestyles.
“The main cause of kidney disease in Ghana is hypertension.” Many people have hypertension but are unable to regulate it. So, if you are diagnosed, you must also do specific things, such as limit your salt intake, lose weight, exercise regularly, and eat healthily. All of these are significant not only for hypertensive individuals but also for diabetics, as diabetes is one of the leading causes of kidney failure.”
He warned consumers who mix energy drinks with cough mixtures that “it is a dangerous practice.” Mixing energy drinks with cough syrup, sniffing superglue, and ingesting other opioids are all detrimental to your health. It can harm your kidneys and expose you to dangerous circumstances.
He also advised against people who eat late at night.
Meanwhile, he has noted that the abuse of painkillers has the potential to increase the chances of kidney disease.
He emphasised the need for people to stop self-medication and seek the help of professionals before taking any drug.
Kidney diseases are expensive to manage.
According to him, dialysis has become prohibitively expensive, and those with renal diseases are experiencing a severe financial crisis. Ghanaians must be cautious.
He went on to say that even if you have the finances to manage your kidney issues and have a transplant, it does not guarantee that you will live a healthy life compared to someone with normal kidneys.
“Managing kidney disease is costly. Those suffering from such ailments are going through a lot. That is why I want to emphasise the importance of Ghanaians taking good care of themselves. The greatest thing to do is to be healthy and avoid activities that increase your risk of renal disease.”
