The Chief Executive Officer of Noble Trust Herbal Clinic has described the habit of mixing cough mixtures with energy drinks as dangerous.
According to him, such a practice has the potential to damage the kidneys and other vital organs of the human body.
He made the remarks while speaking on the health segment on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm.
He said the increase in kidney diseases in recent times was alarming and a major crisis that must be addressed.
He explained that chronic kidney disease signs and symptoms develop over time and that kidney damage progresses slowly. These symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue and weakness, sleep problems, changes in urine output, decreased mental sharpness, muscle twitches and cramps, swelling of the feet and ankles, and high blood pressure.
According to him, chronic kidney disease, also known as chronic kidney failure, is the gradual loss of renal function.
Dr. George Donkor indicated that the kidneys filter waste and excess fluids from the blood, which is then excreted in the urine.
“When chronic kidney disease reaches an advanced stage, dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes, and waste can build up in the body,” he said.
People with uncontrolled hypertension and diabetes, he claims, are predisposed to renal disease.
He added that bad eating habits are a key cause of renal illness and emphasised the importance of Ghanaians adopting proper eating habits to stay healthy.
He also recommended that people stay hydrated at all times because dehydration can lead to kidney problems.
He went on to say that kidney abnormalities from the first to the fourth stage could be treated and managed, but the final stage would necessitate dialysis or a transplant.
