Former Hearts of Oak defender, Daniel Quaye has lifted the lid on why captain Gladson Awako’s contract was terminated ahead of the 2023–2024 Ghana Premier League season.
According to Daniel Quaye, Gladson Awako was sacked from the team because the hierarchy of the club has created a system where senior players can’t complain about the ills in the club and anyone who dares to speak up is forced to leave.
Gladson Awako joined Hearts of Oak under the stewardship of coach Samuel Boadu ahead of the 2021–2022 football season after the Phobians had won the local treble to break their 10-year trophy drought.
Dan Quaye has now linked his departure to problems in the team, as he claimed that the system being run in Hearts of Oak does not give room for vocal senior players.
“They do things anyhow in the club, and when the experienced players talk, they force them out. We all know why Awako was sacked from the club. He was sacked because if things are not going well and he speaks, then there is a problem. There is no proper leadership in the club,” Dan Quaye said in an interview with Rainbow Radio.
He also complained about the board’s refusal to use former Accra Hearts of Oak players who have management experience in the running of the club.
“We have former players who are knowledgeable in football administration, but this board will not involve them in the running of the club when Hearts of Oak is for everybody.”
