Paa Kwesi Hackman, a Deitician at the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), has issued a warning to food vendors and other individuals operating food businesses without a food permit that they will be prosecuted.
He stated that selling food without a permit is illegal and that those who do so must be guided.
He emphasised that such behaviour is prohibited and punished by law.
Restaurants, food joints, street vendors, chop bars, and catering facilities, he says, cannot function without a permit.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he expressed concern about the blatant disregard for authority’s food standards.
This, he claims, endangers consumers’ lives.
He stated that the FDA will take offenders to court and prosecute them.
He made the statements in response to a question on food safety and what vendors who handle food must do.
He stated that food safety is crucial across the food supply chain.
He asked Ghanaians to support the work of government regulatory authorities in developing effective, long-term solutions to food safety concerns.
“If you are a food vendor or sell food for people to consume and are operating without a permit, or if you are sick and still preparing food for people, you are committing an offence, and we will drag you to court when we catch you.”
We are in operating the no food permit no vending. Without a permit, you cannot cook food and sell it to the public. I will also encourage food vendors to be humane and follow the rules. If you are also sick, you should not even consider preparing meals for sale.”
