Haruna Idrisu, former Minority Leader of Parliament and MP for Tamale South has responded to criticism and the majority group on the 24-hour economic policy.
The NDC Flag Bearer, John Dramani Mahama, announced the 24-hour Economy strategy as one of the policy initiatives he will undertake if re-elected.
Haruna Idrisu argued on the floor of Parliament during a debate on the budget statement and the government’s economic policy for fiscal year 2024 that some enterprises operating 24 hours do not invalidate a policy that will provide incentives to those who opt to sign up.
According to the legislature, this strategy will address the critical issue of Ghanaian youth risking their lives crossing the Sahara and the Mediterranean in quest of better chances in Europe.
He referred to paragraph 449 of the budget statement, which discusses a night economy, claiming that the government is just trying to oppose former President Mahama’s 24-hour economy policy.
Further explaining, he stated that the 24-hour economy does not refer to chop bars and drinking establishments that are open 24 hours a day. Instead, it wants to make substantial changes to public goods and services by extending its regular closing time from 5 p.m. to daybreak.
