Alhaji Mohammed Ahmed, popularly known as Mohammed Polo, aka the “Dribbling Magician,” believes Ghana’s participation in this year’s African Cup of Nations could be a turning point for the country if the team shows dedication.
He admitted that the team has not been consistent in its performance at the tournament but was optimistic that this season could be different.
He was responding to the exclusion of the Ghanaian team from the possible teams that could be winners at the tournament.
He was speaking to Rainbow Sports in an exclusive interview.
Senegal, Algeria, Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Cameroon are the teams that have been predicted to emerge as the winners.
Reacting to that, Mohammed Polo said the teams that have been predicted to win have been consistent in the African games compared to Ghana.
“The teams that have been mentioned have all been consistent at the tournament compared to the Black Stars of Ghana. We have not been consistent. Our performance has been poor. The last time we participated, we were kicked out at the group stage. It was a disappointing moment for the country.
We want to forget about the past, so our team ought to perform well at the tournament. They have been ruled out, but with dedication and commitment, they will be able to triumph and make the country proud. The Abidjan AFCON could be a turning point for Ghana, and so I will encourage the players to remain committed and make us proud. If they are listening, they should know that they can perform. The coaches will do their best, but when the players get on the field, they should play as a team and not be selfish.”
It has now been 42 years since Ghana last won the AFCON in 1982.
Several Ghanaians have lost hope in the team and ruled them out of the tournament, but the retired Ghanaian footballer believes Ghana could make a difference.
