The Ghanaian football fan who was detained by the Ivorian police has been released.
Yaw Awuah Boadu Ayeboafo, Consular and Welfare Officer of Ghana’s Embassy in Ivory Coast, confirmed the information.
A Ghana fan allegedly launched a verbal attack on coach Chris Hughton after the Black Stars’ 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde at the African Cup of Nations on Sunday.
Hours after the match, one of Ghana’s supporters in the Ivory Coast went to the team’s hotel and allegedly hurled abuse at 65-year-old Hughton.
He was later arrested by the Police and held in custody.
But speaking in an interview with Rainbow Radio Sports Editor Osei Owusu, alias Winter, the Consular said he has been released.
According to him, Embassy officials were able to get the fan released from police custody.
When questioned if the fan was returned to Ghana after his release, he could not confirm but did say he had been released.
He revealed that ‘when the incident occurred, we had him released, and he was cautioned. As to whether he has left Abidjan, I cannot confirm. But what I can confirm is that he has been released and has been asked to be of good behaviour’.
