Tamale NMTC aims to continuously equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies to excel in the nursing and midwifery fields.

Throughout its existence, Tamale Nursing Training College has maintained a strong reputation for producing competent and compassionate nurses who contribute significantly to healthcare delivery in Ghana. This is because the college employs experienced staff who are dedicated to providing comprehensive theoretical and practical training to their students while having top-notch management headed by Dr. Abdulai Abdul-Malik.

Despite the huge successes and efforts made, the school,, unfortunately lacks many physical infrastructure including school auditorium, adequate hall of residence to accommodate students, a dining hall among others.

The issue/call

Speaking at the launch of the school’s 50th anniversary, the principal of the college Dr. Abdulai Abdul-Malik bemoaned over the lack of these infrastructures and how it has adversely affected both teaching and extracurricular activities in the school.
He said “as an institution we have some infrastructure challenges because as the number of students increase there will be pressure on the existing facilities and the lack of an auditorium to hold programs of this nature as well as a decent dinning hall for our students to eat is a major worry to the school.”
Dr. Malik therefore called on the government, old students, nongovernmental organizations, philanthropists to assist in addressing these challenges.

History

The Nurses’ and Midwives’ Training College in Tamale was constructed and opened for operation in 1974, that same year, the college accepted its first group of 18 students for the Enrolled Nursing (EN) curriculum.

Since its founding, the institution has undergone a number of changes. The college’s original goal was to educate enrolled nurses. The college advanced and began teaching State Registered Nurses (SRN), Qualified Registered Nurses (QRNs), and Registered General Nurses (RGN – Diploma) in 1999.

The institution was one of the few Nursing Training Colleges in the nation to get accreditation in 2009 to teach Registered Midwives (RM – Diploma), and as of 2018, it has the accreditation to conduct the Post NAC/NAP Midwifery curriculum.

The Tamale NMTC is now one of the leading institutions for the training of Nurses and Midwives in Ghana and abroad with this dual purpose in the training of Nurses and Midwives.

The theme for the NMTC 50th anniversary is: 50 Years of Excellence in Nursing Education, the contribution of NMTC Tamale.
