The Ghana Police Service says it has started investigating circumstances leading to the marriage of a 12-year-old girl to Gborbu Wulomo.
According to the Police, it has also identified the minor.
The girl and her mother are currently under Police protection, the Police said in a statement.
The Police further revealed they were working with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection as well as the Department of Social Welfare to provide the necessary support while the matter was under investigation.
The marriage ceremony between the influential traditional priest , 63, and the minor has sparked an outrage in Ghana.
The priest, Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII, married her in a customary ceremony held on Saturday.
The Gborbu Wulomo shrine in Nungua has defended itself against calls for the arrest of its 63-year-old priest over the matter.
A spokesperson for the priest, Nii Bortey Kofi Frankwa II, indicated that the selection of 12-year-old Naa Yomo Ayemuade by Gborbu Wulomo is a spiritual practice that began six years ago.
“When somebody makes such a call it comes from a point of ignorance. Because first, you need to come closer and ask so that you will appreciate what it is but not take hook line, and sinker what is being said,” he said at a press conference.
“Because it goes beyond what is being preached out there. It is deeper than what is being preached. It is deeper for our spirituality,” he told Accra-based GHOne.
