Let’s all agree to adopt Twi as the official language of Ghana; 70% of Ghanaians understand it – Odike

April 4, 2024

Founder and Leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addai Odike, has proposed the adoption of Twi (Akan) as the official or national language for the country.

The businessman and politician claimed that seven out of every Ghanaian understands the language; hence, it will be easier for us as a people to adopt it as our official language.

Odike said “we should not allow selfishness, greed, or the desire to feel superior over others to prevent us from using this as an opportunity to transform this country.

He opined that we can redesign our curriculum and teach the language in our schools.

“In percentage terms, those who speak Akan are more than 70 percent. When you travel to the Volta Region, Tamale, and Bolgatanfa, you can express yourself freely in Akan, and everybody will understand. So don’t we stop the hatred and adopt the language as our official language?

We can start teaching our children and integrating ourselves. We would rather accept English as our official language. We feel that is more superior to what we have,” he declared in an intreview on Rainbow Radio 92.4FM, UK.
