GBA driven by a club of privileged and elite men, who will do anything to protect that privilege, to the detriment of wider society – Barker-Vormawor

Private legal practitioner Oliver Barker-Vormawor has taken a swipe at the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), accusing it of failing to represent the interests of its members and pursuing issues of national interest.

In a post on Facebook, the lawyer opined that the GBA is driven by a club of privileged and elite men, who will do anything to protect that privilege, to the detriment of wider society.

Oliver Barker-Vormawor minced no words in shredding the GBA, of which he is not a member, saying the leadership of the Association takes no moral positions and they are mute in the face of the most obscene oppression.

In his view, the GBA and its leadership are driven by nothing but proximity to power and deal-cutting behaviours.

“They have written themselves into the fabric of moral decay in this country,” he posited.
“What is even strange is that they even do so little for their lawyer members; those pay them millions in dues. When a lawyer was brutalized by the police in the course of his work, during occupy Julorbi house, they chose to protect power over their member,” he added.

He also disclosed that he is a paid up member of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association and the American Bar Association, but not the Ghana Bar Association because these groups fight for rge interest of the oppressed within and beyond.

I am a paid up member of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association. But not the Ghana Bar Association.

I am also a member of the American Bar Association, but not the Ghana Bar Association.

It matters to me that the American Bar Association, has a rule of law initiative that supports human rights work not only in America but also many other countries including Ghana.

It matters to me that the Commonwealth Lawyers Association has issued a statement condemning Gambia’s proposed repeal of the Female Genital Mutilation law.

Any organization you join and are proud to associate with must have values. Consistent values!

Why would lawyer join or feel compelled to join an organization like this?

Because of Bar Conferece, once a year? Oh ho!
