Yaw Buaben Asamoa, the former Communications Director for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called the party out, claiming they have lost their course.
The private legal practitioner contended that the party had strayed from its roots of electing competent candidates to serve its interests in national elections.
Mr. Asamoa emphasized the importance of party members standing up and defending their political parties, ensuring they elect individuals of character, competence, and incorruptibility to lead them and become country leaders.
The failure of party members to demand these things, he noted, has led to incompetent people taking over office and mismanaging the country.
He was explaining why he left the NPP to support the Movement for Change, which was formed by Alan Kyerematen, who resigned from the NPP after failing to win the party’s internal presidential primary.
Mr. Buaben Asamoa said the fact that his father was a founding member does not mean he should stay and defend the evils of the party.
He bemoaned that members of the two main political parties have allowed their parties to take them for granted in the face of the terrible ways in which their candidates are elected.
He wondered why delegates of the NDC would settle on former President John Dramani Mahama, who was rejected by Ghanaian voters in the 2016 presidential election.
He said the vote margin with which Mahama was defeated showed how incompetent he was, and yet, a few delegates through the system of the party elected him as their presidential candidate.
He said if Mahama were to be a family head, he would have been removed from his position, a sheep slaughtered to signify how incompetent he managed the family, and that is what the NPP is also doing.
“It has bended its ways of electing competent people. It has now elected incompetent people in recent times, and that is something some of us cannot defend, so we decided to resign from the NPP.
“The way the NPP is electing its leaders is not the best. The same applies to the opposition NDC, and yet, members are unable to talk. When members refuse to talk, the few with the power, do whatever they want and abuse their office because they know members will not complain because they remain loyal to their parties. Look at how the NDC and the NPP elect their leaders. A few NDC delegates went to elect former President John Dramani Mahama as their presidential candidate. John Mahama was removed from office in a humiliating manner.
We’ve never witnessed something like this in our political history. It meant that he was incompetent. But today, only a few delegates have gone to elect the incompetent candidate who wants to be president again. And so, as a member of the party when you keep defending this, it is problematic. That is the same way the NPP is doing it. As you said, my father was a founding member. I have served the party, but should I continue to be associated with the party when I know they have departed from their original ways of electing competent people? The person they have elected as presidential candidate is incompetent and cannot do the job. I cannot defend this; when I do that, it will affect Ghanaians. If a party elects an incompetent person as leader, it will have serious implications for the country. That has been our challenge as a people.”
