The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced its decision to invoke the authority of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the Privileges Committee of Parliament to probe the alleged bribery given by an NPP MP in Ejisu.
The Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, Kingsley Osei Nyarko, was captured in a video allegedly handing over an envelope from his pocket to two temporary staff of the EC.
The two EC temporal staff were removed from their duties, and preliminary investigations were conducted.
After conducting the probe, the EC said the envelope was given to the temporal staff for lunch.
It further disclosed that it has held discussions with the police to launch criminal investigations into the matter.
In a statement issued by the Ashanti regional secretary of the NDC, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, he said the party “demands transparency and accountability from the EC.”
According to him, the party will petition Parliament and the OSP to probe the matter thoroughly.
“We are committed to pursuing this matter rigorously through appropriate channels, including engagement with the Special Prosecutor and the Privileges Committee of the Parliament of Ghana.
“The EC led by Madam Jean Mensah must do more to redeem their credibility as their unprofessional conduct does not inspires confidence in the lead up to the 2024 general elections.
“The NDC remains steadfast in our commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring that all citizens can exercise their democratic rights without fear or favor.
“We urge the EC to uphold its mandate with impartiality and transparency, and we will not hesitate to hold them accountable for any breaches of trust or misconduct,” portions of the statement added.
