The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has admonished the Electoral Commission (EC) to put in place measures to address the challenges that have characterised the ongoing limited registration exercise.
He gave the advice after visiting some registration centres.
He stressed the need for the electoral body to have a backup plan to ensure every eligible voter is registered before the process ends.
“The Electoral Commission must improve on its system of registration. Obviously, if we are all talking about network failures, then I am not sure that they will be able to complete on schedule. The frustrations and delays must be addressed.
“So I am urging the Electoral Commission to ensure that they have a backup system because, as it is, the frustrations are too many. And I would encourage the Electoral Commission to live up to expectations.”
The limited registration exercise started on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
The registration exercise is for first-time voters and persons who wish to own a voter card.
The 21-day exercise will end on May 27, 2024.
According to the EC, the exercise aims to register approximately 623,000 first-time voters across the country.
“The registration will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. And that gives us the figure of 623,000 that we have put there. That is not to say that we cannot go beyond that. We did mention that in 2023, we projected 700,000 people to visit our registration centres,” Commissioner Jean Mensa said.
