Supreme Court nominee Anthony Forson Jnr. has stated his opposition to proposals aimed at placing a ceiling on the number of justices appointed to Ghana’s highest court.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee during his vetting on Thursday, August 27, Mr Forson argued that the expansive mandate of the apex court necessitates an open-ended bench.
”Because of the wider jurisdiction allocated to the Supreme Court, there should be no cap on the number of judges, I am an advocate of no capping at the Supreme Court,” he told the panel.
His stance contrasts directly with recommendations by the Constitutional Review Consultative Committee, which advised capping the Supreme Court membership at 15—comprising the Chief Justice and 14 associate justices.
The proposal forms part of broader constitutional reform measures backed by the government, which also include introducing a fixed, single 10-year term for the Chief Justice or tenure until the mandatory retirement age, whichever comes first
