Keche, a Ghanaian musical hip-life duo formed in 2004 and consisting of Joshua Kojo Ampah and Andrew Kofi Cudjoe, has revealed that they have not received one cedi from the Ghana Music Rights Organization in royalties.
The two musicians disclosed this in an interview with Sokoohemaa Kukua on the Midmorning show on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM.
According to the duo, since they started their career as professional musicians, they have received even one cedi from the music rights organisation.
This came up when the host asked if they had received any royalties for the several songs they had released.
“We have never received one Ghana cedis from GHAMRO before. We would delve deeper into this the next time you host us,” Keche Joshua said.
When his attention was drawn to the fact that some musicians received their royalties, he stressed that “we have not received a penny from GHAMRO. We have not received any calls from GHAMRO to come for royalties.”
On his part, Keche Andrew said that there are no proper mechanisms in place to collect and distribute royalties for musicians in Ghana as compared to other countries.
The musicians have therefore underscored the need for proper structures to be adopted in collecting royalties for musicians.
