The Majority Leader of Parliament Effutu Constituency Member Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has sponsored the screening over 500 individuals for Hepatitis B.
The screening included200 inmates and 300 officers at Effutu Prisons.
The initiative coincided with 46th birthday of the legislator.
The ceremony exercise was organised in collaboration with the Mumbies Foundation.
It forms part of efforts to raise awareness about Hepatitis B, with May 27th now dedicated as Hepatitis B Awareness Day in the Effutu Constituency.
Aside from the screening exercise, the MP provided meals for all inmates and donated a 50-inch television and various relief items to the prison.
Speaking on behalf of Afenyo-Markin, the Municipal Chief Executive Officer of Effutu, Alhaji Kassim Zubairu, underlined the necessity of such actions in protecting inmates from potential Hepatitis B epidemics.
Project Manager of Mumbies Foundation, Israel Adorbley, who is in charge of the Hepatitis B testing admonished the Ghana Health Service to add Hepatitis B to the list of diseases covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme since it’s dangerous and spreads faster than HIV/AIDS.
He stated that their goal is to eradicate Hepatitis B from the Effutu Constituency.
Joseph Nyankey, Assistant Director of Prisons for Winneba Prisons, thanked Afenyo-Markin for his assistance and expressed hope that the efforts would considerably enhance the convicts’ health and well-being.
This is not the first time the MP has taken on such an effort.
A few weeks ago, the MP established an office for hepatitis B testing, immunisation, and management in the Effutu constituency.
In 2023, the MP voted one million Ghana cedis (GH1 million) to combat the Hepatitis B virus after many individuals perished from the sickness in the Effutu Constituency.
