One of Ghana’s top middle- and long-distance athletes, Ishmael Arthur, has advocated for more sponsorship and support for Ghanaian athletes.
The athlete, a Lance Corporal in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), expressed concern about how athletes struggle with their roles.
According to him, several athletes who had potential have abandoned athletics because they have no support.
He advised Ghana to learn from the Kenyan example and invest heavily in athletes if we want to win laurels.
He noted that Kenyan athletes perform better in tournaments because they have a support system back home.
That was not the case for Ghana; he bemoaned, stressing that it is difficult for athletes to survive in Ghana because they lack the needed support to succeed.
“There are a lot of people who are extremely good athletes, but they have given up athletics because they do not have any form of support. Without support, no athlete can succeed. Our Kenyan counterparts are performing so well at tournaments because they get sponsors. With your support or sponsorship, our athletes will go far.
With a support system, our athletes will have the time to train and be prepared to face other equally good athletes, especially those from Kenya. We have good athletes who have abandoned athletics because they don’t have any support.”
He made the request during an interview with Rainbow Radio’s Sports Editor, Nana Osei Owusu ‘Winter’.
