Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), claims that Ghana is the world’s second country to implement the Digital Address System.
He noted that the Digital Address System, commonly known as the Ghana Post GPS, has proven useful to the country at all levels.
The government introduced the digital property address system with the key objective of improving navigation of built-up spaces via basic landmarks like shops, drains, and roads.
The system, which was designed by Ghanaian information technology firm Vokacom, is aimed at providing every Ghanaian with an effective means of addressing every location and place in the country using an information technology application.
Interacting with the Kumasi Regional House of Chiefs as part of his campaign tour on June 10, 2024, the Vice President stated that in the past, the lack of an efficient addressing system caused Ghanaians to develop a culture of relying on directions from others, which sometimes resulted in an exercise in frutility.
“Without the Digital Address System, how can you have access to a bank loan? There are so many uses of the digital address system. That is why I suggested the introduction of the digital address system. Every town or village across the country has a digital address system. So we have solved the problem that existed. Ghana is the second country in the world to have a digital address system. We are the only country in the world to have this system in place.
We have also digitised our health system under the E-Health initiative. We have connected all of our teaching hospitals, regional hospitals, and district hospitals. We have connected over 300 hospitals to the digital system. So today, you don’t need your folder. What you need is your ID number, and your health record will be accessed by health professionals across the country.”
Daasebra Osei Bonus II welcomed Dr. Bawumia and his staff and praised him for his interest in digitalization.
He said that digitalization affects almost everything we do, emphasising the importance of “being bold and implementing digitization to the letter.”
“This is something we, as chiefs, appreciate and support. We congratulate you, and we are solidly behind you, asking the Almighty God to bless you and make your heart desires come true. As kings and queens, we are behind you, and when the Asantehene returns, we will inform him of your visit.”.
