John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticised the politicisation of the premix distribution system.
The previous president was upset that politicians had reportedly taken over fuel distribution, putting unnecessary strain on fishermen’s activities.
He has thus guaranteed fisherman that if elected president in 2024, he will develop a system to help eliminate the apparent politicisation of premix fuel distribution.
Speaking to fishermen at the Tema Fishing Harbour as part of his “Ghana We Want” tour, former President Mahama said the provision of premix fuel and outboard motors, among others, has now become a political scheme by the Akufo-Addo government, which has created middlemen in its distribution, worsening the cost of the commodity.
He pledged to introduce an effective monitoring mechanism where the Navy will survey the ocean to rid off illegal trawlers that usually deplete the fish in the sea.
He added that he will abolish the closed season for artisanal fishermen to enhance their trade.
The previous NDC administration he said introduced premix fuel distribution and other initiatives like the distribution of subsidised outboard motors as a result of the feedback the government had from the fishermen.
However, the situation has changed because of the politicisation of the distribution. A new NDC government will reverse that to the true essence for which it was introduced.
