President Akufo-Addo has described the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the presidential election as a competent pair.
The president, whose tenure will soon end, expressed confidence that his vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and his running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, have all it takes to manage the country.
He has therefore asked Ghanaians to vote massively for the NPP because the candidate and his running mate will build on his achievements and so much more if granted the opportunity.
He said this before Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia, where the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) officially introduced Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as a running mate.
Mr. Akufo-Addo stated that he has no regrets about working with Dr. Bawumia, a man he said has been instrumental in his achievements.
He said the NPP settled on him as the presidential candidate because they believe he is competent and has what it takes to break the eight-year-old Jinx.
“He has also settled on Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running mate. If God grants them the opportunity, he (Bawumia) will manage the country together with him (NAPO). He has been exceptional under my administration. What I am excited about is that these two gentlemen are people I have worked with, so I know their strengths and what they can do. If Ghanaians should vote for them come December 7, 2024, they are competent and prepared to manage the country beyond expectations.”
My term is coming to an end, and so the NPP went into an election and elected Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the presidential candidate. I have worked with him over the past eight years. He has been very instrumental. He has been supportive. He has solidly stood by me. I am not sure any president has had the kind of support Bawumia has given me.
He is humble and supportive. He is the one that the NPP selected as the candidate for the party. We are optimistic that he is the one who can help us break the eight-year jinx. He is competent and will be able to manage the country well if he is elected president. He will build much more on my foundation and legacies to make Ghana progress further.”
President Akufo-Addo also praised Dr. Opoku Prempeh for successfully implementing the Free Senior High School policy and his achievements at the Energy Ministry.
According to him, as someone who has worked with both the candidate and his running mate, he knows they will perform better and administer Ghana effectively.
“When I first assumed office and rolled out the free SHS policy, I put NAPO in charge as Education Minister, and he successfully managed the sector so well. Today, the free SHS policy has been successful, leading to needless debates, with some people claiming to be the ones who initiated the policy. But we will accept it regardless. But NAPO was the one who successfully implemented the policy. In my second term in office, I appointed him as Minister of Energy, and he performed exceptionally well at the ministry. Some are predicting the return of Dumsor, but that is never going to happen. He has served his country well. So I am confident that he will perform so well as the Vice President.”
