President Akufo-Addo has criticised former President John Dramani Mahama for claiming that he initiated the implementation of the free senior high school policy.
The President dismissed Mr. Mahama’s allegation as ridiculous, implying that the NDC and its leadership criticised the policy and informed Ghanaians it was unachievable.
Speaking at the official outdooring ceremony of running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh in Kumasi on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, Akufo-Addo stated that the NDC is not an alternative that Ghanaians must consider.
At a media engagement on Sunday, July 7, 2024, John Dramani Mahama refuted allegations that he was against Free SHS.
He argued that, as someone who started Free SHS with the implementation of progressive Free SHS, he was against the policy but wants it reviewed to maximise its benefits.
“I support any bill that will improve our education—to make it sustainable, to afford quality education for our children. So yes, any bill that would achieve this is something that I will support,” John Dramani Mahama said.
But reacting to the claims by Mahama that he started free SHS, Mr. Akufo-Addo recounted that it was Mr. Mahama who indicated that if he had one billion cedis, he would rather invest in other projects than free SHS.
“It is surprising that Mahama says he was the one who started free SHS. He was the same person who was against the policy and told Ghanaians that it was not going to be possible. But today, he is telling Ghanaians that he was the one who started the policy. Whenever we promise to do something, they oppose it and tell Ghanaians that it is impossible. Do you know the other surprising thing that has happened?
Three days ago, Mr. Mahama, the same person who fiercely criticised free SHS, is today making claims that he is the one who started it. He has realised that Ghanaians have accepted the policy, and there is no way any government will scrap it. He has realized the free SHS is a good policy. He should commend me for implementing the policy because the policy is a good one.”
