Founder and leader of the National Liberation Congress (NLC), Stephen Atubiga, has appealed to Ghanaians, especially those in the diaspora, to support his campaign and quest to be the next president.
According to him, running a political campaign, especially for the presidential election, is expensive.
He has therefore requested that Ghanaians in the United Kingdom and other countries invest in his campaign.
“I want to appeal to those in London to support my party. Even if it is a pound, we will appreciate it. It is not easy. To those who are our sympathisers and believe in our ideologies, we need their support. We are in opposition, and so those who believe in what we do and appreciate our efforts, we want them to support us.”
He said on Frontline on Rainbow Radio (87.5 FM) that the party has a strategic approach to addressing the nation’s challenges. He underscored the need for us to depart from the status quo and give him an opportunity because he has a bold vision for the future of the country.
He accused the NDC of abandoning its founding socialist ideas and ignoring the demands of the impoverished and underprivileged sections of society.
A party established on the ideals of social intervention has now ventured into the realm of business.
He also came out strongly against the monetization of elections, both internal and national, which he claimed was spawning corruption.
He lamented that voters now want money before voting, and politicians who give the money later steal it from the state after winning power.
“If you don’t have money, you can’t lead the country; voters will take money from you before they vote for you. Voters now vote based on the depth of the pockets of politicians. So they’ve already planted the seed of corruption in the pockets of politicians and turned around late to accuse the politicians of being corrupt. You’ve shown that if you don’t have money, you cannot lead the country. Do politicians grow money on the streets or in trees to run their campaigns? Vote for politicians that have what it takes; vote for politicians that have the mindset and capacity to deliver, but you are voting for people based on the depth of their pockets and turn around and say they are corrupt.”
