We’ve achieved a lot over the past 90 years, but we also have challenges that must be addressed – Children’s Hospital

The Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital has highlighted its achievements throughout the last 90 years.

The hospital says it has transitioned from a facility that serves solely as a nutritional rehab centre for malnourished children, known as Kwashiorkor, to a general hospital.

The director of the hospital, Dr. Maame Yaa Nyarko, indicated the facility started as the Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre of PML, which is one of the special departments under the public health unit and its objective is to prevent, promote, restore, and improve the nutritional status of the nutritionally vulnerable through nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions, but after ninety years, the facility is now a general hospital.

According to her, the Princess Marie Louise Hospital has earned a reputation for being one of the leading child health care providers in Ghana.

She made the remarks when Brand Ambassador for UnityLink Money Transfer Mrs. Adwoa Saah Boateng, with sponsorship from the company, donated some items and a cash amount of Ghc20,000 to the hospital under its ‘The Kia Fie Project’.

The medical practitioner said the professional staff in the faculty have remained committed to delivering excellent care to its patients, particularly children.

Currently, the facility has various departments providing holistic healthcare for both children and adults. The hospital began as a nutritional rehab clinic for malnourished children but has since evolved to provide outpatient department services to children aged zero to eighteen years.

Aside from that, they have a specialist clinic that treats children with serious diseases like asthma, sickle cell disease, and obesity.

She said they have a vision to expand their services, but due to limited space, they are unable to do so.

“We have an outpatient department that deals with all forms of care for children from zero to eighteen years old. We also have several units that treat both children and adults, including the eye unit, the ear, nose, and throat clinic, and the dental clinic. They all treat children and adults.

We also have a specialist clinic that treats children with asthma, sickle cell disease, and abnormalities, and we continue to offer nutritional rehabilitation. We have a paediatric clinic that provides paediatric surgeries. We have achieved tremendous success over the last 90 years, but we also face problems. Although the hospital has expanded, we still have limited space. It is our intention to expand and add new services to what we offer here. However, we don’t have enough space for it. When the gutters in the community clog, the ones at the hospital do not flow. We have access to water difficulties. Because the buildings are old, we have roof leakages, electrical problems, plumbing problems, and others, all of which impede the smooth operation of the hospital “
