The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has named 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park as the one who made an assassination attempt on former United States President Donald Trump.
The attack at the Butler, Pa., rally left one spectator dead and critically injured two others.
The former president, in describing what happened, indicated that he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.”
He was speaking to thousands of fans when he grabbed his ear and had blood covering his face after the suspect opened fire with an AR rifle from a rooftop 130 yards from the stage.
Details emerging indicate that eight shots were fired, and the crowd started screaming as Trump was swarmed by his Secret Service agents.
FBI special agent Kevin Rojek said it was’surprising’ the gunman was able to fire multiple shots at Donald Trump before he was killed by the Secret Service.
The special agent in charge of the FBI Pittsburgh office described the shooting as an ‘attempted assassination’ and still hasn’t formally identified the suspect.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has condemned the attack.
Addressing the nation about two hours after the shooting, Biden expressed relief that the former president survived.
“We cannot allow this to be happening,” Biden said. “The idea that there’s violence in America like this is just unheard of.”
The President said “I have an opinion, but I don’t have any facts”.
