The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has asked President Nana Ado Dankwa Akufo-Addo to ensure peaceful elections.
He has called on him not to hide behind security to intimidate opponents of his party in the elections.
“Mr. President, you, the commander in chief of the Armed Forces, your word to the security sector that you are interested in a peaceful election will be obeyed; ensure peaceful elections,” he said during the launch of the NDC’s campaign in Tamale on Saturday, July 27, 2024.
According to Mr. Nketiah, the president’s constant claim of not being ready to hand over power to any other person but only a candidate of the NPP can best be described as political platform talk.
He has therefore challenged the President to come out and tell Ghanaians that he is prepared to ensure free, fair, transparent, and peaceful elections.
He said the President ought to tell the security agencies that the power of the masses is stronger than any army or police in the whole world.
He stressed that, just like former President John Mahama and the NDC handed over power to him some eight years ago in one peace, he should also do the same if his party is defeated.
He maintained that although the desire of the president is to see his part win, he has a bigger responsibility of making sure that there is a is a transparent process and a peaceful transition to the next president without a drop of blood coming out.
He said “if the election is going to be peaceful, it must begin from your mouth, Akufo-Addo. If the election is not going to be peaceful, it will come out of your mouth on a presidential platform. Come and speak as the President of the Republic of Ghana, saying that you are interested in peaceful and transparent elections and that when the people decide, you are ready to hand over.”
