The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has revealed that former soldier Richard Jakpa was not discharged from service due to misconduct.
This was contained in the testimony of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lt. Gen. Thomas Oppong-Peprah.
He testified in court on Monday, July 29, 2024, following a subpoena.
The Military Secretary of the GAF, Air Commodore Nana Adu Gyamfi, had told the court that Jakpa was not honourably discharged from the GAF.
The Attorney General claimed during the
cross-examination of Jakpa, the third accused in the ambulance trial, was not dishonourably discharged from the forces.
Lawyers for Mr. Jakpa subpoenaed the military secretary to testify.
Lewd counself ro Jakpa, Thaddeus Sory, proposed during the questioning that Jakpa’s discharge was primarily based on regulations related to inefficiency.
The military secretary answered in the affirmative but added that the discharge of Jakpa was due to misconduct identified after disciplinary proceedings.
However, during the CDS’ cross-examination in court on Monday, Jakpa’s counsel questioned the military’s top commander about whether misconduct played a role in the discharge, to which he replied negatively.
The senior military officer also told the court that he had not seen any court order for the release of Jakpa’s dismissal letter to the AG’s office.
He added that he has never received a letter requesting the release of Jakpa’s dismissal letter.
