The presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has emphasised the need for Ghana to consider a shift from its energy generation mix to include solar.
The Vice President was optimistic that the addition of solar to our energy mix will help address the energy crisis we regularly face as a country.
He said this while addressing the Bono Regional House of Chiefs as part of his nationwide campaign tour.
He promised to cut the cost of power by 50% if he was elected president.
“We have high electricity costs since generation is expensive. I want Ghana to transition away from utilising liquid fuels to generate electricity and towards solar. That is cheaper. Solar electricity will provide relief to the country,” he said.
He also reiterated his pledge to work on a policy framework for the use of electric vehicles for public transport in Ghana.
If implemented, this would reduce the cost of transportation as the major components of the cost is fuel and spare parts and also reduce carbon emission.
He also assured the Bono Regional House of Chiefs and their subjects that his government would see to the completion of all commenced projects if elected as president.
The Bono Regional House of Chiefs President, Nana Osiadieyo Agyemang Badu I, praised the current administration for initiating developmental projects but expressed concern over the government’s failure to address key social infrastructure projects like roads and hospitals.
“I will not be truthful to you if I deny the projects NPP did in the Bono Region. But in your second term in office, it appears you are sleeping on the job and roads in the region have deteriorated. If you want to lead this country, then do something about our roads.”
