Muntaka Mubarak, the Member of Parliament for Asawase in the Ashanti Region, has said that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s goal of achieving 85% in the region’s 2018 general elections is unrealistic.
The congressman claimed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was fully prepared to give the NPP a run for its money in the impending election.
He stated that the NDC will meet the NPP boot for boot, shoulder to shoulder, and defeat them in their methods.
Muntaka Mubarak was optimistic that the NDC would make significant gains in the region.
He was speaking at a campaign launch in the constituency.
“The NPP has declared its intention to secure 85% of the region, but that is not possible. We are assuring them that if they are prepared, we are also ready for them, boot for boot, leg for leg, head for head, hand for hand, shoulder for shoulder,” he stated.
He also cautioned the government of the NPP to rescind any decision to rig the elections because the NDC will not allow that to happen.
He stressed that there would be no single location where the NPP would succeed in rigging the elections.
“We want credible, transparent, and fair elections as well as a peaceful process. Our slogan is that we will not rig the elections in our favour, so do not also rig the elections in your favour. This year, there would be nowhere they would have the opportunity to rig the elections, and so, if they have that agenda, they should rescind it.”
Speaking at the same event, Haruna Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, described President Akufo-Addo’s presidency as the worst in Ghana’s history.
He therefore appealed to Ghanaians to vote massively for the NDC.
He said the NPP keeps claiming that the Ashanti region is their World Bank and will always get the votes of the people, but “the Ashanti region is only for the NPP if they are performing, Ashanti is only for the NPP when businesses are good, Ashanti is only for the NPP is low, and therefore we are optimistic that Asanteman will support John Dramani Mahama and support the NDC to win. We need just a little above 35% in the Ashanti region to declare John Dramani Mahama the winner of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections. This is our aspiration, and we must work towards that.”
