Some Ghanaians residing in the UK have been forced to stay indoors over a UK protest.
Speaking exclusively to Rainbow Radio’s Sir Richie, several of the Ghanaian individuals said they would not step out until the situation was brought under control.
Some of them, who are also students, have refused to go to school when lectures resume due to the threats to their lives.
Details emerging indicate that in South Belfast, riot officers had stones and petrol bombs thrown at them in an area close to a supermarket, which was set on fire at the weekend.
British nationals are protesting on the streets against asylum seekers and immigrants, leading to violent clashes following the stabbing of three young girls in South Port, northwest England, last week by a 17-year-old boy, born to Rwandan parents in the UK.
Sir Richie revealed that the incident had created tension in Hull, Liverpool, Bristol, Manchester, Blackpool, and Middlesbrough, with some shops looted and police attacked.
According to him, Ghanaians are not the only ones affected; Jamaicans and other asylum seekers have been attacked.
He also disclosed that the Ghana Mission in the UK had yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
Several homes and businesses belonging to Muslims were also attacked in Middlesbrough.
“I have spoken exclusively to several Ghanaians who are scared. They are currently indoors due to the protest. Some students have also told me they will not resume school if they reopen because the protestors could storm their schools and attack them.
The protests are being championed by Far Right groups who are opposed to the arrival of immigrants to the UK. They claim the hospitals in the communities are full due to immigrants, and so they have taken the law into their own hands, causing trouble. A young man by the name Tommy Thompson (founder of the English Defence League) and a resident of Cyprus is on X, formerly Twitter, fuelling attacks on the immigrants. He is inciting the UK nationals to attack the immigrants, including Asians, Africans, and others.”
As I speak with you, more than 400 people have been arrested, and several officers have also been attacked by the protestors. We have also gathered that the attackers will storm London and attack communities such as Briston, Duston, South London, North London, and West London. I have spoken to some Ghanaians in these areas, and they are scared,” he added.
He noted that British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said rioters behind violent disorder will rapidly face “the full force of the law.”
He (Prime Minister) has called for calm and assured the immigrants that efforts are underway to deploy more offices to maintain law and order.
“What is happening is part racist, fuelled by known racist groups”, Sir Richie added.
Meanwhile, he has also stated that the immigrants in London have expressed their readiness to respond in equal measure should the protestors get London to attack them.
The police have also expressed their preparedness to protect lives and property.
