Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has slammed former President John Dramani Mahama for criticising him over the current state of Ghana’s economy.
Dr. Bawumia says the former president and presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) lacks the moral right to criticise him over issues relating to the Ghanaian economy.
The second gentleman of the land, in mincing no words, took Mahama to the cleaners, stating he should know of his own record, which he opined did not come anywhere near the record of the Nana Addo-led administration.
He specifically criticised Mr. Mahama for his appreciation of the banking sector’s collapse.
He asked former President John Dramani Mahama to go and read the receiver’s report on the banking sector crisis and the issues.
Dr. Bawumia revealed for the first time that the challenges in the banking sector gave him nightmares and that he could not sleep due to these challenges.
He refuted assertions that this government collapsed banks, adding that these banks were merged together and not collapsed.
He said the government saved 4.6 million depositors and prevented them from losing their deposits from those banks.
“I don’t understand if the former president actually understands the banking sector. Some atrocious things happened, and this is why these banks had to be saved. They were not collapsed. They were merged into other banks, and no banking deposit or GHC1 cedi was lost.
Everybody maintained, but you had very bad things happen. Some of the banks broke all the rules. They were given one billion cedis to get out of the mess and only got deeper into the mess, he claimed.
He then stressed the need for Mr. Mahama to go back and read the full report on the banking sector crisis and appreciate the issues before making unfornuded claims.
Speaking at his maiden edition of meet the press in Accra on August 25, Dr Bawumia said “We all don’t have short memories. Mahama left an abysmal record. We endured dumsor, people died because of dumsor. The national ambulance service was almost dead and unemployment was high,” he added.
