The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has finally responded to the question of why he is not implementing several of the policies he has promised to outline, particularly tax incentives.
Dr. Bawumia, responding to a question he was asked at his first major media engagement on August 25, 2024, in Accra, explained that he would have nothing new to implement if he implemented these policies.
He also stressed that he was not the president or the one in charge, highlighting that these policies have not been factored into the budget and cannot be considered.
He also explained that the budget presented before the patient for consideration is sent to the legislative house in the name of the Vice President.
Dr. Bawumia said, “I must have a manifesto; otherwise, if I could, what would I eat if I came to the office? I mean, how can you do everything now? Even former President Mahama, who was president, said, I am Vice President, and he was President; why didn’t he do everything then?” he said amidst applause from officials of the government and party leaders.
He then went on to ask why former President John Dramani Mahama was returning as president and could not do everything back then.
“The budget that has gone to parliament and has been passed is not my budget. The budget goes in the same direction as the President. It doesn’t go in the name of the vice president. But when you have to think about what you want to do, you come up with new ideas, and I have come up with new ideas that I want to do when we come into office. Everyone running for office, whether you are Kamala Harris or Bawumia, will still have to think about what they have to do when they get into office. This is why I am presenting my new ideas as to what to do.”.
Meanwhile, he has also declared that the policy proposal in the NP’s manifesto will be implemented to revamp the economy.
He stated that “what this country needs is an upgrade, not a reset.” And if given the mandate, I will roll out the measures outlined in our recently launched manifesto to revamp the
economy,” he stated.
He asked former President John Dramani Mahama to check his track record when he was in office whenever he talked about economic mismanagement under Akufo-Addo.
“Sometimes I get amazed when former President Mahama talks about economic mismanagement. He should know his own record,” Dr. Bawumia said.
