Former deputy general secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Obiri Boahen, has revealed that he was nearly expelled from the party for proposing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the viable presidential candidate for the party.
He explained that when he proposed Dr. Bawumia as the one capable of replacing President Akufo-Addo, the opposition from within the party was so strong that he nearly lost his membership with the elephant family.
He disclosed this in an interview with Kwabena Agyapong on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
Mr. Obiri Boahen said he saw the need for the party to settle on the Vice President when nobody else had thought of that.
‘’In the future, when I author a book, I will have enough to write about. I will capture in my book how in 2021, when nobody had asked the question of who would replace President Akufo-Addo as flagbearer, I single-handedly took it upon myself even at the risk of being expelled from the NPP. Some accused me of campaigning when the party had not sanctioned aspirants to campaign. I was the one who proposed the man from Mamprusi because I knew he was capable. With my own resources, I visited several regions campaigning for Bawumia. I visited the burial places of SD Dombo, Jato Kaleo, CK Tedam, Kofi Abrefa Busia, Abayifa Kabu, and others just in the name of Dr. Bawumia.’’
Mr. Obiri Boahen argued that former President John Dramani Mahama has no track record compared to the candidate of the NPP.
Dr. Bawumia is deemed honest, credible, and trustworthy, and he is expected to be a superior leader compared to the former president.
To him, Mr. Mahama is behaving as if we don’t know his record of mismanagement, incompetence, and lack of integrity.
‘’Who would you vote for? Will you vote for someone who is a former president and cancelled the nursing and teacher training allowance, could not implement free SHS, sponsored ads against free SHS, and somebody who implemented free SHS and restored the nursing and teacher training? Why should you vote for somebody who said free SHS was impossible but is now taking credit for it and going around promising free tertiary education? Is he not the same man who promised several policies but could not fulfil them?’’
‘’We don’t have short memories to forget the mess Mahama created while in office. He is behaving as if—excuse my language—some of us have water in our brains. We know his record, and his record is not an enviable one.,’’ he added.
