The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has indicated that politicians who keep on reiterating their decision not to hand over power have no other option.
The Speaker opined that the 1992 constitution has made it clear that power resides in the citizens, and their will must be respected in every election.
He made the remarks while speaking with journalists on Friday, August 30, 2024.
He was responding to questions from journalists during an engagement with the Northern Region branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).
The engagement surrounded the role of parliament in ensuring a peaceful electoral process this year and the challenges confronting the legislative house.
“Those who make utterances that they won’t hand over power will have no choice but to do so because the Constitution says so, and the power is with the people.”
According to him, Parliament remains committed to ensuring peaceful elections.
On his part, the Northern Regional Chairman of the GJA, Yakubu Abdul-Majeed, praised the speaker for his contributions towards press freedom.
He advised journalists to prioritise the country’s peace and play their roles in a manner that will ensure peaceful elections this year.
