‘Akufo-Addo and Bawumia’s suspected complicity hinders our efforts to eradicate galamsey’ – MP

September 3, 2024
galamsey(1)

The Member of Parliament for Builsa South has claimed that the government’s inability to effectively tackle illegal mining, also known as galamsey, is due to the alleged complicity of President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Reacting to the latest update provided by the Ghana Water Company (GWCL), Dr. Clement Apaak said it is a wake-up call to deal with the canker once and for all.

He stated that the latest research conducted into communities affected by galamsey has shown how some women are losing their wombs with others giving birth to deformed babies.

Dr. Apaak remarked that the illegal miners’ employment of severe chemicals has extended beyond the surface, affecting the groundwater table, and stated that ‘illegal mining presents an existential threat to our collective survival.’

Speaking in a media interview, the MP posits that illegal mining is going on and has escalated because the one who is supposed to crack the whip is deeply connected with the ongoing illegal activities.

‘’Let’s be clear: the Akufo-Addo, Bawumia NPP government is singularly responsible for the decimation of our forests, the pollution of our water bodies, and all the consequences that we are beginning to record.’’

He emphasised that the issue of galamsey must be placed squarely at the doorstep of Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

He added that we have all seen the documentaries of all those involved in galamsey, and yet we are beating about the bush, adding, ‘’Who doesn’t know that the presidency is the headquarters of the ongoing decimation of our forests and our water bodies?.

He said, ‘’Let’s call a spade a spade, and we need to identify and apportion blame at the doorstep of the President. You mean to tell me that the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, in the person of Akufo-Addo, is telling us that he is so impotent and incapable of dealing with this menace if not for complicity? The reason why this is happening is because of official complicity, and the only way this can come to some resolution and for sanity to prevail is if Ghanaians vote against the NPP because Mahamudu Bawumia is not going to do anything different. He says he is going to upgrade—he is going to upgrade the broken structure; he is going to upgrade the broken economy, galamsey, corruption, hardship, crude haircuts, inflation; he is going to upgrade the high cost of fuel, the cedi, from the current one dollar to sixteen cedi to who knows where’’.
