Nana Piesie Anto, a political analyst, proposes forming a Committee of Eminent Ghanaians to scrutinise presidential and parliamentary contenders seeking election as president and MPs.
He stated that the offices of president and member of parliament should not be so easily contestable.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he opined that it is good to have people express interest in serving the country; however, some of them are not in the contest with the agenda to provide leadership but for business.
He said some of them come into the contest in the presidential and parliamentary elections as a way to make money while relegating the core objective of democracy and elections to the backdoor.
Mr. Piesie Anto has therefore proposed the amendment of the law and requirements for one to be elected president so we will sanitise the system and have only candidates with competence, and ‘’that is why I am proposing the establishment of a panel of interviewers who will interview anyone who wants to be elected as the president or MP to determine if they qualify to manage Ghana as president or a constituency as MP”.
He posited that some people who contest the elections don’t even express their opinion on any national issues, and yet, when it was time for an election, they jump into the political scene and file to contest.
‘’Whether you can speak English or not and want to be elected into public office, you must be subjected to that scrutiny so that those who emerge as the best will be allowed to contest. We need this for our democracy because there are those who have no value, and yet they contest to rule Ghanaians all because it serves as an avenue for them to amass wealth for themselves and their families.’’
