Former Ghanaian player Habib Mohammed has expressed disappointment in the decision by CAF to reject the Baba Yara Sports Stadium as home grounds for the Black Stars game against Sudan.
The team is likely to host their remaining 2025 Africa Cup of Nations home qualifiers in Nigeria, according to multiple reports in the West African country.
This followed the Confederation of African Football’s rejection of their home venue, the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
CAF’s inspection team had declared the stadium unsuitable for the matches due to poor drainage, uneven playing surfaces, and uneven grass cover.
Reacting to this, Habib Mohammed said it is so unfortunate that none of our national stadia met the CAF’s requirement—a situation he opines calls for serious and immediate intervention from the government.
The former player said he feels sad for Ghana football because this is an embarrassment.
‘’This is very sad news for Ghana football. It is most embarrassing for Ghana to reach a point where our stadiums failed to meet the requirement of CAF. I am most disappointed that we have to search for alternatives in other countries to play our home matches. When it comes to football and the way we have sold the country, we should not have gotten to this point. I am therefore appealing to President Akufo-Addo to intervene. Is it about lack of finances or the lack of access to land to build new stadia? What is really happening? This is embarrassing, and so I am appealing to authorities to address these issues with immediate effect.’’
