Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has taken a swipe at former President John Mahama, accusing him of insulting chiefs, religious leaders, and civil society organisations.
Dr. Bawumia, who is the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), asked Mr. Mahama to be responsible in his utterances, avoid the politics of insults, and stick to the politics of ideas.
Presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama says the desperation on the part of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia moving churches to shrines with the hope of securing victory will yield no results.
He said the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) cannot be praying for victory when the leadership they have provided Ghanaians was nothing to write home about.
Speaking at a campaign event as part of his Greater Accra Regional Tour, he said it is unfortunate that despite the mess created under this government, chiefs, men of God, and other religious leaders are showering praise on Dr. Bawumia and declaring victory for him.
However, in response to former President John Dramani Mahama’s statements, Dr. Bawumia stated that his opponent is unhappy because he realises the party will lose the elections because it lacks ideas.
‘’ I think Mahama has realised that he will lose the elections massively, and so he easily gets angry. He has insulted Pastors, Imams, and CSOs by describing them as hypocrites. Is this the kind of communication healthy? How can you describe them as hypocrites? He has insulted the EC and also described the NPP government as a foolish government. This is not healthy for our politics. This is unprecedented, and it is disappointing that it is coming from a former president. We must have at least some standard of decency in the language we speak as politicians. The election is not about insults. It is about ideas. You only insult when you lack ideas.
If you have ideas, you present your ideas. We have bold solutions to problems. You claim we are a foolish government, but we have created more jobs than your government. We have built more roads than your government. We have built more interchanges than your government. We have built more bridges than your government. We have built more factories than your government. We have built more schools than your government. We have built more hospitals than your government. We have built more AstroTurf than your government. We have built more sports facilities than your government. We have built more fibre optic cables than your government. Every sector of the economy you point to, we have performed better than your government. We have done better than you, and you dare call our government foolish. That is why I have challenged you to a debate if you believe you are competent enough,’’ he said.
