The Coalition of Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) trainees have expressed shock at claims by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia that he is not aware that they are owed arrears.
Public Relations Officer of the Coalition, Nana Tachie Eric, said it cannot be true that the President is unaware that they are owed several months of arrears.
He stated that the management of NABCO was under the direct supervision of the Office of the Vice President.
The Coalition has made a passionate appeal to the National Peace Council, urging its swift intervention in the ongoing crisis regarding unpaid arrears since 2021.
The Coalition expressed deep concern over the prolonged delays and has issued a stern warning of planned demonstrations to demand their unpaid arrears.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he lamented that they were paid for the work they did for the year 2021 and yet were sacked.
He lamented that ‘’since 2021, we have been chasing the government and demanding payment. We have embarked on a series of demonstrations since 2021, submitted petitions, and yet we have been ignored. The level of anger expressed by NABCO members is alarming, and as leaders, we have managed to address the issue and asked them to remain calm. That is why we have petitioned the Peace Council to intervene. We are appealing to them to intervene and ask the government to pay us to help prevent any form of activity that will destabilise our peace and security.
The number of trainees is 67,000 and unemployed, and so if they decide to demonstrate, it will create some level of tension in the country. That is why we have appealed to the Peace Council to advise the government to pay us. They promised to give us permanent jobs but they sacked us in 2021. We are owed nine months of arrears. If the Vice President is claiming not to be aware that we are owed, then we would be disappointed. We have submitted several petitions to his office, and so he cannot claim that he is unaware of our situation. The NABCO initiative was directly under his office, and so claiming he is unaware we are owed is most unfortunate. The NABCO was established under Bawumia’s tutelage. He supervised it, and so he cannot make such claims. We had submitted a petition to his office on June 2, 2024, where he promised us that he will engage the Finance Ministry to release funds so we are paid,’’ he added.
He said ”we petitioned the Peace Council to intervene because our members are angry and want to hit the streets and demonstrate. Bawumia has given us failed promises from 2021 till date, and so we can regard his claims as usual rhetoric, and we are not going to listen to it anymore’’.
